  • Responsible for the quoting process of new stamping die builds and engineering changes to current dies
  • Review and approve tool processes, strip layouts and designs.
  • Act as liaison to tool shops that have been awarded the responsibility to design and build dies or gages making sure that customer and Wolverine specifications are followed, including quality and timing constraints during the tool build.
  • Participates in APQP activities including feasibility reviews, part design reviews, Run at Rates, etc.
  • New Model Tooling Start Up: resolves issues with tool vendor; assists plants in establishing process parameters; authorized to make tooling changes with vendors, manage vendor tooling run off activies
  • Current Model Tooling: Analyzes poor performing dies; revise process parameters; assists in resolving tooling issues at all facilities.
  • Continuous Improvement: Recommend/develop plans to implement QDC and other methodologies to improve throughput and OEE.
  • Work with other Wolverine facilities to determine tooling best practices
  • Maintain thorough familiarity with pressroom developments and new materials in the industry which might be adaptable to use by the organization.
  • Originates and applies new and unique engineering methods

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains stamping dies through a variety of standard methodology.
  • Assemble and disassemble dies to perform repairs, maintenance and corrective action.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to insure that dies are as production ready as possible.
  • Maintains logs and appropriate records on die maintenance.
  • Participates in tool design.
  • Performs a variety of welding applications to repair broken tool steels as capable.
  • Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts. Performs inspection functions to specified standards with assistance of operator and/or Quality Assurance personnel, as required to verify tool work.
  • Assists in development of detection methods and devices
  • Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines methods for sequence of operations.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, drills, saws, and surface grinders, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications. Smooth flat and contoured surfaces with power hand grinders.
  • Insures that dies are properly tagged when leaving the tool room.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
  • Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
  • Has basic knowledge of press operations.
  • Communicates problems and estimated repair times to production as accurately as possible.
  • Assists with set up problems, as required.
  • Maintains communication within the department and with other departments.

  • Input data into software based preventative maintenance system and assist with the development and implementation of systems and procedures for both toolroom and maintenance departments.

  • Assists in the set up of or making of fixtures for welders, tappers and/or other production related equipment.
  • Makes simple gages for inspection department as required.
  • Repairs lift trucks, floor scrubber or sweeper as necessary.
  • May order general supplies for the maintenance department or solicit quotations for miscellaneous building repairs, as necessary.
  • Maintains log on all presses and perform preventative maintenance duties to support company PM program, including changing oils and other lubricants, filters; checking pressures, switches and buttons, cords, hoses, and other press equipment and supply systems; repair and maintains sprayer systems including fixtures, hoses, connectors, etc.
  • Performs daily safety checks on all presses and equipment to assure MIOSHA compliance including guarding, safety blocks, light curtain systems, lock-out/tag-out, etc.

Reads work order or follows oral instructions to obtain materials or containers to be moved.

Loads and unloads materials (ie:  steel coils, etc.) as required, conveys materials (boxes, skids cartons, tubs, etc.) to designated areas and stages material for inventory.

Provides the proper scrap hoppers and packing containers to the presses and coordinates timing to reduce set-up and downtimes.

Maintains machine oil/fluids inventory, empties as required, including waste oil.

Provides tracking of WMS scrap metal (Martin Bros., Reliable, and non-cold rolled), and monitors steel skid returns.

Transports designated materials to QA and Production “Red Tag” staging areas for re-work.

Assists in die changes as needed, maintains die rack inventory, and lifts steel coils with power hoist to assist in changeovers, etc.

Provides required training to new Material Handler Trainees as directed.

Maintains a high level of “housekeeping” in the designated areas.

Performs required lift truck periodic safety/service checks and assists in the preventative maintenance and service as needed/directed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides “Lead person” direction to 2 employees in the material handling group. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
